Summer of soul became an award winning documentary based on a true life story of the Harlem cultural festival which took place in the summer of 1969, had over 300,000 people at the event and this macked as a new era of cultural movement in the black community of United States of America. The film was directed by Ahmir Thompson best known as Questlove of Roots band.
The event was organized by Tony Lawrence and Hal Tulchin at the New York's Mount Morris Park which showcased popular artist such as; Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Ray Barretto, Sly and Family Stone, Hugh Masekela etc. One interesting fact about the event was that it took place over six Sundays on a roll begging from June to August 1969 and it has forty hours of recording on tape.
"Summer of Soul, which won the 2021 Sundance Documentary Grand Jury Prize, is a lot more than a concert film though. It uses the event to examine the extent to which 1969 was a turning point for black identity." - BBC News Entertainment.
This important event was actually a hidden Treasure that sat in the basement for 50 years according to Questlove in an interview, it revealed to an extent the unfairness done to black history over time considering the event that took place at that period of time and the revolution of the new black movement was never brought to limelight.
" I'd say it took me five months, just to live with the footage. Five months of just constantly having these monitors in my house in every room, my house, my kitchen, my bathroom, my bedroom, I kept it on 24-hour loop. That's all I watched. And I kept notes on anything that gave me goosebumps. And what I wound up doing was curating it, like I curate a show or DJ gig." - (westlove BBC Interview).
